U.S. Rep. Byron Donalds won the Florida gubernatorial race on Tuesday, ending the contest against former U.S. Rep. David Jolly. An Associated Press race call confirmed the victory, securing the office for the Republican Party.
Donalds will assume the duties of the governor's office when the term begins, succeeding Ron DeSantis. DeSantis is departing because of term limits. Polls conducted before the election indicated that Donalds entered the vote as the favorite, maintaining a slight lead over his opponent in most surveys.
The Republican primary featured a large field of candidates. Donalds secured the nomination after receiving an endorsement from President Donald Trump. He also maintained a distinct fundraising advantage over Jolly throughout the general election campaign.
Voters faced a state where 39% of Floridians reported feeling worse off than two years prior, compared to 26% who said they were better off. Cost of living emerged as the primary concern for the electorate. Donalds proposed streamlining permitting requirements to lower the costs of homebuilding in response to rising homeownership expenses.
Donalds gained national visibility during his 2020 election to Congress, where he challenged the legitimacy of Joe Biden's presidential victory. His political career has centered on challenging the existing administration while addressing local economic pressures.
