Kylian Mbappe scored his 100th career goal for Real Madrid on Sunday night as the visitors defeated Barcelona 2-1 at Camp Nou. The French forward's double secured the first league win for his side this season and broke Barcelona's nine-game winning streak in La Liga.
Barcelona entered the match as heavy favorites, holding a perfect record of nine consecutive victories. A win would have allowed them to surpass the club's previous record for the best start to a Spanish top-flight season, set by Real Madrid in the 1968-69 campaign. Instead, Hansi Flick's team suffered a second straight defeat, following a loss to Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League just days earlier.
The match shifted the all-time head-to-head record in Real Madrid's favor. With this victory, Los Blancos now hold 107 wins against Barcelona's 106 in the history of El Clasico. The result also marked only the second time Real Madrid has beaten Barcelona in eight meetings this season.
Mbappe, 27, finished the match with 14 goals for the season. He joined Real in 2024 from PSG and now sits as the second-highest scorer in La Liga. The milestone occurred the day before the Ballon d'Or ceremony in London, where the Frenchman is considered a frontrunner for the award.
Real Madrid manager Jose Mourinho celebrated the win with a knee slide on the pitch. It was his first Clasico since returning to the club after a 13-year absence. His side has won five consecutive matches across all competitions, including three in La Liga and two in the Champions League.
In the league standings, Real Madrid sit in third place with 24 points after ten matches. They are three points behind Barcelona, who lead the table. Atletico Madrid occupy second place with 25 points. Mourinho noted that his team must continue to focus on winning the championship rather than just individual games.
Mourinho stated, "If we win today but lose at El Sardinero, it counts for nothing, because Madrid isn't playing to win at the Camp Nou. They're playing to win the championship."
