A six-figure salary no longer ensures financial comfort for most Americans. SmartAsset reports that the annual income required to cover basic needs and savings has risen across the country. In 2026, a single adult must earn at least $80,000 to live comfortably in every state. The threshold exceeds $100,000 in nearly half of the nation.

Households with children face even higher barriers. In 40 states, a family of four requires at least $200,000 in pre-tax income to meet essential expenses. Massachusetts presents the highest cost for such families, requiring an income of $329,555. For single adults, Hawaii is the most expensive location, where $129,002 is necessary to maintain a comfortable standard of living.

The methodology behind these figures relies on data from the MIT Living Wage Calculator. SmartAsset adjusted these baseline costs using the 50/30/20 budgeting rule. This framework allocates 50 percent of income to necessities like housing and utilities, 30 percent to discretionary spending, and 20 percent to savings. The resulting estimates represent the total annual pre-tax income needed for a full-time worker.

Montana recorded the steepest increase in required income since 2025. A single adult there now needs $100,797, an 8.6 percent jump from the previous year. New York followed with an 8.4 percent increase, pushing the requirement for a single worker to $124,342. Maine, California, and Massachusetts also posted double-digit or near double-digit percentage gains in income requirements.

Conversely, six states saw the income needed for comfortable living decline compared to 2025. Tennessee recorded the largest drop at 1.7 percent, where a single adult now needs $89,898. Maryland, Louisiana, North Carolina, Mississippi, and Texas also registered negative year-over-year changes. In West Virginia, the least expensive state for single adults, the required income stands at $81,245.

Mississippi remains the most affordable state for families of four, with a threshold of $187,533. The data reflects the most recent updates from MIT, which were finalized in February 2026. These figures exclude taxes and account for the cost of minimum basic needs alongside retirement and emergency savings.
