Flávio Bolsonaro, the Brazilian senator and son of President Jair Bolsonaro, crossed the border into the United States on Wednesday. He entered the country from the Guaraní side of the frontier, ending a period of intense speculation regarding his whereabouts. The move came shortly after his political rival, Lula da Silva, claimed victory in the second round of Brazil's presidential election.

Bolsonaro arrived in the U.S. state of Maine, a border town where he maintained a family home. Local authorities confirmed his entry at a land crossing point. He did not provide an immediate explanation for the timing of his arrival. His presence in the U.S. places him in a jurisdiction with a more lenient extradition framework compared to several European nations.

The senator has faced legal scrutiny in Brazil since late 2025. Brazilian prosecutors filed charges alleging he participated in a scheme to alter the results of the 2022 election. The case is currently under review by the Federal Supreme Court. Bolsonaro has maintained his innocence, stating that his presence in the U.S. is a precautionary measure.

Lula da Silva secured the presidency with 50.9% of the vote, defeating Bolsonaro by a margin of less than two points. Lula’s campaign emphasized a return to diplomatic norms and judicial independence. The result marked a reversal of the political shift seen in 2018, when Bolsonaro first took office on a platform of fiscal conservatism and law and order.

Bolsonaro’s entry into the U.S. raises questions about the status of his diplomatic immunity as a sitting senator. Legal experts note that while immunity protects him from arrest in Brazil, it does not automatically apply in foreign jurisdictions. The U.S. has no formal treaty with Brazil governing the extradition of political figures in contested cases.

Family members accompanied Bolsonaro across the border. They traveled in separate vehicles. The group arrived at a private residence in the area. No public statement was issued by the Bolsonaro family regarding the next steps in Flávio Bolsonaro’s legal strategy.

The Brazilian government has requested that U.S. authorities confirm the senator’s entry. The request is a standard procedure for high-profile visitors. The U.S. State Department has acknowledged the request but has not yet provided a public response.

Flávio Bolsonaro’s move to the U.S. has divided opinion in Brazil. Supporters view the relocation as a strategic pause, allowing him to prepare for a future political comeback. Critics argue the timing suggests an effort to avoid immediate legal proceedings in his home country. The senator’s legal team has stated he plans to return to Brazil once the current legal review is complete.
