FBI agents searched a residence in California on Monday, marking the latest development in the federal investigation into former U.S. Representative Eric Swalwell. The move comes months after federal authorities first intervened in the case against the 45-year-old Democrat.
In August, FBI officers stopped Swalwell at an airport and took possession of his electronic devices. During that same period, agents also conducted a search of his home in Washington, D.C. The current California search adds to the growing list of locations targeted by federal investigators.
Swalwell faced allegations of sexual misconduct while serving in the House of Representatives. Several women accused him of acts including unsolicited sending of nude photographs and rape. One accuser claimed the assault occurred while she was too intoxicated to respond to his advances.
The former congressman has consistently denied the claims. His attorney, Sara Azari, described the accusations as "false, fabricated, and deeply offensive." She characterized the allegations as a "calculated and transparent political hit job."
Swalwell withdrew from the California gubernatorial race earlier this year after the misconduct reports emerged. He subsequently vacated his congressional seat. A separate House ethics committee inquiry into his conduct concluded upon his departure from the chamber.
He now faces parallel investigations in New York City and Los Angeles. In August, the White House also released declassified files regarding a separate, unrelated FBI probe into his past relationship with a suspected Chinese spy named Christine Fang. No charges related to that specific matter were ever filed.
