Jay-Z will headline the 2027 Super Bowl halftime show, according to an announcement from the National Football League. The performance is scheduled for February at SoFi Stadium. The gig carries a reported fee of $25 million, a figure that traces back to a 2019 contract between his entertainment company Roc Nation and the NFL. That deal granted Roc Nation the right to book the league's annual halftime acts for several years.

This marks the first time an artist with such direct contractual influence has secured the slot for themselves. The rapper has spent the last seven years curating the lineup, frequently featuring hip-hop artists. While previous acts have played the halftime show, none had the leverage to select themselves for the most visible slot in the league's schedule.

The announcement arrives as Jay-Z completes a rebranding effort following a legal dispute earlier this year. A civil lawsuit had named him and Sean Combs as co-defendants in rape allegations, which Jay-Z denied. He subsequently sued the filing attorney, Tony Buzbee, for defamation and extortion. An appellate court recently dismissed that suit. Combs, who also denied the allegations against him, was sentenced to more than four years in prison on prostitution-related charges.

In March, Jay-Z told GQ senior associate editor Frazier Tharpe, "We played enough defense, 2026 is all offense." Since then, he has changed his public image, removing the locs he had grown in tribute to his daughter, Blue Ivy, and his deceased uncle. He also sold out three consecutive nights at Yankee Stadium.

During the first night of that residency, the rapper addressed critics who questioned his business moves. He responded to the backlash over making his vinyl reissue available exclusively at Target during a grassroots boycott of the retailer. "They say I sold out. Yeah, I did sell out. Three nights. I sold Yankee Stadium the hell out," he rapped a capella before performing "Politics As Usual."

Reactions from within the hip-hop community have been mixed. Some view the Super Bowl appearance as a crowning achievement. Others, including former NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick, see it as the culmination of a deal that used Jay-Z to improve the league's public image. Kaepernick recently recounted this perspective in comments to which Jay-Z has not responded.

The debate was further fueled by the release of Jay-Z in 8, an eight-episode HBO documentary co-executive produced by the rapper. The series features long-form conversations with former Def Jam founder Rick Rubin. Set in the former French stock exchange in Paris, the episodes cover topics ranging from generational trauma to his early hustling days. In the final episode, Jay-Z criticizes what he calls "house Negroes" in the Black community.

"We're not getting it as a race together," Jay-Z said in the documentary. "We're slowly getting there separately, but it's not a concerted effort of us to align our powers and our finances to benefit our community." He also noted that some figures act as extortionists who demand financial support for political alignment.

The documentary also revisits his 2007 response to journalist Elizabeth Méndez Berry, who had criticized him for wearing a Che Guevara t-shirt with a diamond Jesus piece. Méndez Berry recently told The Ringer's Joel Anderson, "The piece was smacking Che Guevara upside the head." Jay-Z has maintained that he is keenly aware of public critique, citing his 2010 book Decoded as an effort to contextualize his lyrics.

The halftime performance will be Jay-Z's first major stadium show since his residency. He previously played the 2027 Super Bowl selection process as a curator, having pushed rap artists to the forefront of the NFL's entertainment lineup. The contract that secured his spot was part of a larger agreement that gave Roc Nation control over the event's musical direction for the next several years.
