The music industry is currently focused on a new generation of alt-pop artists who are bridging the gap between independent acclaim and mainstream arena status. Devon Again, the stage name of 23-year-old Devon Johanningmeier, has officially entered this tier as she prepares to open for Olivia Rodrigo’s upcoming tour.

Johanningmeier is set to perform a long stretch of support dates for Rodrigo, including 10 nights at the Intuit Dome in January. She has also signed a record deal with Interscope, specifically with the imprint of producer Dan Nigro. Nigro is known for his work with both Rodrigo and Chappell Roan. Devon Again is the second artist to sign with Nigro’s label.

The momentum for Johanningmeier accelerated after her performance at the Daisy Chain Fields festival in Irvine in August. During that event, she shared the stage with established figures such as Sarah McLachlan, Kathleen Hanna, and Shirley Manson. Rodrigo, who is friends with Johanningmeier, booked her for an early-day slot. Rodrigo praised Johanningmeier’s work ethic, noting that she joined the festival lineup at the last minute without hesitation.

Johanningmeier’s rise began in Los Angeles, where she moved at age 18. She gained an initial following on TikTok during the pandemic era. Her sound, described as intricate electro-folk-rock, gained wider attention with her 2025 EP, In Order. The project featured the single Cherry Cola, which became a defining track in her catalog. Producer Jon Buscema, her primary collaborator, noted that her distinct perspective and emotional honesty set her apart from her peers.

The next major step for Johanningmeier is the completion of her debut album, which she hopes to release next year. Her recent single, Snake the Drain, showcases a shift toward a more country-influenced style. She will soon begin touring with Rodrigo, where she will perform to audiences of up to 20,000 people per night at the Intuit Dome.

Johanningmeier remains in Los Angeles, living with roommates in an east side neighborhood. She has expressed that the transition from local musician to arena headliner brings new pressures. She cited the need to protect her creative space as she navigates increased public visibility. Her manager and producers emphasize the importance of maintaining her artistic identity while scaling her operations.
