The Los Angeles County district attorney’s office returned the case against four Newhall fire suspects to investigators on Monday. The office determined the file was not yet ready for a final charging decision.

A spokesperson for the district attorney said the case was sent back to law enforcement to gather additional evidence. The goal is to answer lingering questions and clear up missing details before prosecutors make a final call.

The suspects were arrested over the weekend on suspicion of arson and conspiracy. The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department announced the arrests in connection with the Aug. 24 blaze in Newhall’s Old Town. The four individuals have been released without charges pending the further investigation.

The fire began inside an auto-body shop early in the morning and spread to an adjacent building. The Los Angeles County Fire Department confirmed the origin and the path of the spread. The blaze involved seven structures and caused approximately $13 million in damage.

The destruction affected the heart of the Santa Clarita community. A boutique, a gastropub, and a theater were lost in the inferno. The financial impact on local businesses is substantial based on the estimated repair costs.

The Sheriff’s Department stated on Tuesday afternoon that it works closely with the district attorney’s office during both investigative and judicial processes. The department respects the role of the prosecutor in reviewing cases for filing consideration. It remains committed to a thorough investigation and to working toward accountability and justice for the victims, businesses, and others impacted by the Newhall Fire.
