Larry Millete was sentenced today after a hearing that ended in a medical emergency involving his father.
The proceedings took place in San Diego County. Members of both the victim’s family and the defendant’s family addressed the court before the judge issued the final ruling.
Maya Millete’s relatives delivered emotional statements first. Millete’s attorney then requested time for the defendant’s mother, father, and aunt to speak in his support. Prosecutors objected to a statement by Millete’s father, Benito Millete, which briefly paused the hearing.
Benito Millete required immediate medical attention shortly after the objection. He was removed from the courtroom on a stretcher. “I need a medical. I got a pacemaker,” Benito Millete said before being rushed out.
Larry Millete spoke to the judge after his father’s departure. “I know I wasn't the best or greatest husband, but I would consider myself a decent and good husband,” Millete said. “I'm not a monster. I'm not a bad person.”
District Attorney Summer Stephan responded to Millete’s remarks. She argued his comments showed a lack of remorse. “Out of Larry Millete's mouth, there was nothing about bringing her home, about beginning the process of having his children be able to have their mother's remains,” Stephan said.
A news conference followed the sentencing. Law enforcement officials and Maya’s family discussed the five-year investigation. Maya’s sister, Maricris Drouaillet, thanked ABC 10News reporter Laura Acevedo for guiding her through her first media interview. “To Laura Acevedo, thank you for my first interview,” Drouaillet said. “You walked me through the interview. I've never been in front of a camera, and that helped me a lot.”
Chula Vista Acting Chief of Police Dan Peake confirmed that authorities are still searching for Maya Millete’s remains. “The Chula Vista Police Department remains committed to continuing the search to bring Maya home and provide her family with the closure they deserve,” Peake said.
