Democratic National Committee Chairman Ken Martin stated that Democrats will immediately target the federal tax and spending package that reduced Medicaid and SNAP benefits. The party leadership aims to use its new majority to reverse what Martin called the "Big Ugly Bill." This legislation scaled back federal assistance programs to fund tax cuts for the wealthiest Americans.

The strategic pivot follows a national election where Democrats flipped long-held Republican seats. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer described the outcome as a generational remake of the Senate map. He noted victories in states that had not elected a Democrat in years. Party leaders in Washington are now preparing an aggressive legislative and oversight agenda focused on lowering everyday costs for voters.

Martin told reporters on Capitol Hill that voters responded to affordability pitches and sent a direct message to President Donald Trump. "They were sending a message to Donald Trump," Martin said. "'Get off your ass and do something to help me. Get off your ass and do something to help our country.'" He emphasized that the new majority will prioritize delivering on economic promises.

Specific policy targets include rolling back tariffs imposed by the Trump administration. Democrats also plan to reverse federal cuts to social safety nets. These measures are part of a broader effort to address economic concerns that drove voter turnout in recent elections. The party intends to move quickly on these items to establish its legislative record.

Foreign policy will also dominate the agenda as Democrats plan legislative maneuvers to end the ongoing war in Iran. While members of both parties have discussed impeaching Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth over the handling of the conflict, Martin did not formally endorse the proceedings. He stated that Hegseth will be held accountable for his actions during the war.

Beyond legislation, Democrats intend to use their committee chairs to launch investigations into alleged corruption within the executive branch. Martin said the party can manage both tasks simultaneously. "We can walk and chew gum at the same time," he said. "Meaning that we can both deliver on that agenda and also hold people accountable in this country, and the reality is we're seeing massive corruption with this administration."

The party leadership will coordinate these efforts through the House and Senate committees. The focus remains on combining immediate policy changes with rigorous oversight of the current administration. This dual approach aims to satisfy voters who sought both economic relief and accountability from their representatives.
