Police in Brisbane are investigating whether organized crime groups played a role in the drive-by shooting that killed a 19-year-old woman. The incident occurred outside Fitzy's Loganholme in the city's south, leaving the victim with fatal injuries to the head and neck.
Vana-Reese Schuster-Togiatau, a resident of Jimboomba, was struck by gunfire on Saturday night. She was transported to Princess Alexandra Hospital, where she remained in critical condition until her death on Thursday morning. Three other men, aged 27, 37, and 38, were also treated at the hospital. One man underwent surgery and is recovering, while the other two have been released.
The venue was hosting a boxing event at the time of the attack. Masked gunmen fired into a crowd, and authorities are currently searching for the individuals responsible. Detective Inspector Ian Galpin stated that approximately 80 officers are dedicated to the murder investigation.
Galpin expressed emotional support for the victim's family, noting that they are struggling and have requested privacy. He urged members of the public who possess knowledge of the event to come forward. He described the victim as being in the prime of her life when her life was taken in a cowardly manner during a simple night out.
The investigation remains open to all possibilities, including gang involvement. Galpin indicated that if the inquiry identifies gang members or associates, the scope of the investigation will expand. Police have not yet confirmed a motive or identified specific suspects.
The next step in the process involves gathering witness statements and forensic evidence to establish a timeline of events. Investigators aim to determine why the shooting occurred and who ordered it.
