Christian Pulisic has agreed to a new four-year contract with AC Milan that will keep him at the club through June 2031. The announcement came on Friday, less than 24 hours before the team played Inter Milan in the city derby. Milan also revealed a record naming rights deal for their stadium the day prior to the player's contract update.

Sources told ESPN that the 28-year-old winger from Hershey, Pennsylvania, will receive a substantial salary increase. The move secures his status in Italy for the next four full seasons. It also ends speculation that he might return to the United States to join New York City FC at their new Etihad Park stadium, which opens next summer.

The club believes Pulisic fits a specific tactical role under manager Ruben Amorim. Milan views him as a player who can drop deep into pockets of space to create plays, while also possessing the ability to receive long passes and stretch the defense. This dual capability is rare among modern wingers. The stability of having a manager who values his specific skill set appears to have been a key factor in his decision to stay.

Pulisic’s track record at Milan has been productive despite recurring physical setbacks. He has scored at least ten goals in all competitions in each of his three full seasons with the team. He ranks third in goal contributions in Serie A history since the 2023-24 season, behind only Lautaro Martínez and Marcus Thuram of Inter Milan. However, muscle injuries limited his availability last season and caused a long scoring drought in the latter half of the 2025-26 campaign.

The injury issues extended to the 2026 FIFA World Cup in the United States. Pulisic played in only half of the available minutes across five matches for the U.S. men's national team. The team was eliminated in the round of 16 by Belgium, a result that capped a difficult tournament for the attacker. These health challenges have historically prevented him from reaching the very top tier of elite European clubs, despite his $73 million transfer to Chelsea in 2019.

AC Milan is currently in a transitional phase. The club has won the Serie A title only once in the last 15 years and has not won the Champions League in nearly 20 years. They failed to qualify for the Champions League this season following a late-season slump and will compete in the UEFA Europa League. CEO Gerry Cardinale continues efforts to restore the club to its historical prominence, but the team remains a step below the absolute elite in Europe.

The Italian league as a whole has seen a decline in global standing. The national team has missed the last three World Cup tournaments. Only Inter Milan, Pulisic’s city rivals, have had recent success in European competition, finishing as runners-up in the Champions League twice in the past four years. Pulisic’s decision to remain with a club that is successful but not dominant mirrors the trajectory of his club career to date.

The contract locks in his future in Europe for the next four years. He will not be returning to the United States for the upcoming season. The deal provides him with a platform to continue his campaign for individual recognition while stabilizing his position at a major European institution.
