A recount in a Montana House district narrowed the winning margin to just 17 votes.

In the 2024 race for House District 57, Scott Rosenzweig secured the seat with 3,802 votes against Marty Malone’s 3,785. The initial count showed Rosenzweig leading by 20 votes, but the recount reduced that difference. This legislative contest marked the first and only recount in the state that year, and it stood as the eighth legislative recount in Montana since 2000.

Statewide, 612,423 of the 799,849 registered voters participated in the November 5, 2024, general election. That total represented a turnout rate of 76.57%. Consequently, nearly one in four eligible voters did not cast a ballot in the election that produced the close district result.

Local families often use such narrow outcomes to explain the value of participation to children. One parent described bringing their son to voting activities since his birth to demonstrate that the process requires effort and thought. The family discusses candidates and issues together, allowing the child to ask questions and observe the reasoning behind their choices. This approach aims to make voting feel like a familiar community practice rather than an abstract duty.

The parent noted that the family does not expect the child to agree with every selection made. Instead, they want him to understand that voting is a privilege that allows residents to influence representation. By listening in on research and discussions, children learn that their future vote will carry the same weight as the 17 votes that determined the HD 57 outcome.
