JetBlue hikes checked bag costs to $50 as fuel prices surge
The increase takes effect immediately, with peak holiday rates reaching $70 per bag, following a March fee bump that triggered industry-wide price changes.

JetBlue has increased the cost of checked luggage for a second time in 2026, raising the standard rate for economy passengers on domestic and transborder routes. The new pricing structure applies to tickets purchased on or after November 3, placing the base price for a first checked bag at $50. This marks a jump from the previous $39 rate and comes just as the holiday travel season begins.
During peak travel windows, including Thanksgiving and the winter holidays, the fee for a first bag rises to $55 if paid at least 24 hours before departure. Passengers who wait until the final 24 hours face steeper costs, paying $60 during off-peak times and $70 during peak periods. The price for a second checked bag also increased, starting at $70 per way off-peak and $75 peak, with airport check-in rates reaching $85.
The airline attributes the price hikes to rising fuel and operating expenses. In an emailed statement, JetBlue noted that the adjustments allow it to keep base fares competitive. The carrier also emphasized that the changes give customers the option to pay for checked bags only when necessary. Executives pointed to resilient demand despite the higher fares.
These fees represent a sharp increase from the start of the year, when the first bag cost $35 off-peak. The surge in jet fuel prices began following the Iran war, which started in late February with U.S. and Israeli strikes. The conflict has remained unresolved, keeping traffic restricted through the Strait of Hormuz. This bottleneck has kept global oil supply costs elevated.
JetBlue data shows the financial pressure on the airline is intensifying. The average fuel price reached $3.91 per gallon in the summer, a 57% increase from the same period a year ago. The airline expects that average to climb to $4.64 per gallon in the final three months of the year, an 85% year-over-year jump.
This is the second time JetBlue has raised baggage fees this year. The first increase occurred in March and contributed to a wave of similar price hikes across major U.S. carriers, including Delta, United, American, and Southwest. Some travelers, such as eligible credit card holders and loyalty program members, retain the benefit of free checked bags.
