The Odyssey stopped moving in Cambodian waters on Tuesday, leaving 200 residents stranded after the ship's owner cited a sharp rise in operational costs. The vessel, which has been stationary, was previously marketed as a long-term residential option for retirees seeking a life at sea. The sudden halt in service forces passengers to disembark without a finalized plan for housing or transportation.

Florida-based Villa Vie, which operates the 642-foot ship, stated that fuel expenses have surged in recent weeks. According to a statement on the company's website, monthly fuel costs historically averaged about $1,800. In parts of Asia, that figure recently climbed to an estimated $6,000 to $8,000. Villa Vie noted that it could not pass these increases directly to residents and is currently working toward a restructuring plan over the next 60 days.

Sharon Lane, a 78-year-old retiree from Orange County, spent 15 months on the ship before leaving in August due to health issues. She paid more than $200,000 for a 15-year residency or the life of the vessel. Lane told NBC Los Angeles in the summer of 2025 that she was excited to live aboard, but conditions changed over time. She observed fewer port calls and longer stretches of time spent idling in the ocean.

Lane described a period where food rations decreased and meal times shifted. She said the company moved lunch service to almost 7 p.m. and served cookies, prompting some passengers to hoard food. Lane also noted that operators asked residents for additional fuel fees multiple times over the past few months. She recalled thinking the requests were unreasonable, especially for friends who relied on Social Security and had sold most of their belongings to afford the residency.

Friends currently onboard report that they have not received the assistance promised by management. Lane said the owners told media they were coordinating disembarkation and identifying temporary living arrangements, but passengers on the ship claim they have not received hotel coupons or other help. Villa Vie has not responded to phone calls or emails seeking further comment.

The company's statement on its website emphasized that it is working with residents to coordinate their exit. It also noted that no financing for the restructuring has been finalized yet. Lane is now working with her insurance company regarding the cost of her residency. She described the experience as a mix of sadness and anger, noting that the ship's owners had described the situation differently in public statements.
