Tesla has announced a substantial increase in its Full Self-Driving software adoption, reporting 1.74 million active subscriptions. This figure represents a 67 percent rise from the same period last year. The company presented these numbers in its third-quarter 2026 shareholder letter, positioning the metric as a key indicator of software growth. However, the methodology used to calculate this total has drawn attention for its specific alignment with the performance criteria set for CEO Elon Musk's compensation package.

The reported count includes both customers who pay a monthly fee and those who purchased the software outright. Tesla clarified that the metric follows the definition established in the 2025 CEO Performance Award. This approach means that owners who paid up to 15,000 dollars for the feature in previous years continue to be counted as active subscribers. The only exclusion from this total is free trials. Tesla ceased selling the software as a one-time purchase on February 14, 2026, making the monthly subscription at 99 dollars the standard option for new buyers in the United States.

Elon Musk's 2025 award consists of 12 tranches, each requiring specific market capitalization and operational milestones. One of these operational goals is reaching 10 million active Full Self-Driving subscriptions. By including upfront purchasers in the current count, the company moves closer to this target. As of June 30, Tesla identified only the 20 million vehicle delivery milestone as probable for achievement. The compensation plan remains in effect through 2035.

The company also highlighted a 75 percent attach rate for new deliveries in North America during the third quarter. Tesla stated that this represents a nearly twenty percentage point increase from the previous quarter and suggests that the software is driving demand in available markets. The letter did not specify whether this rate includes introductory offers or how many of those buyers remain active after several months. This lack of detail contrasts with the active subscription metric, which explicitly excludes free trials.

In the third quarter, Tesla added 260,000 net new subscriptions, marking its strongest quarter to date. At this pace, the company would require approximately eight years to reach the 10 million milestone. Based on the growth rate over the past 12 months, the timeline could extend to roughly 12 years. The same accounting method appears in the company's cumulative delivery figure, now at 10.2 million, which includes unsupervised robotaxis placed into commercial operation to align with the pay package targets.

Tesla noted that it believes the software is influencing customer demand. The board of directors established the definition for these metrics, and the company's financial reporting now reflects these parameters. While the numbers show strong growth, the precise breakdown of monthly payers versus upfront purchasers remains undisclosed in the latest filing.
