The Milwaukee Brewers captured their first World Series championship on Wednesday night, defeating the Tampa Bay Rays 4-1 at Tropicana Field. The victory ended a 44-year title drought for a franchise that plays in the smallest market in Major League Baseball. The win secured the pennant for the Brewers, who led the National League with 103 regular season wins and finished the postseason with an 11-2 record.

The path to the title began in 1969 when the franchise started as the Seattle Pilots before moving to Milwaukee the following year. The team's previous attempt at a championship in 1982 ended in a Game 7 loss to the St. Louis Cardinals after surrendering a 3-1 lead in the sixth inning. The 2026 squad, led by 67-year-old manager Pat Murphy, overcame a 4-3 extra inning loss in Game 4 to close out the series. Murphy, who won the National League Manager of the Year award in 2024 and 2025, credited the team's unity for the result.

"This group of guys right here, the 2026 team, will be remembered forever, and they deserve that because they were a team," Murphy said. "They're not worried about their own stats. No one cares about that. They care about coming together and winning tonight."

Jacob Misiorowski delivered the winning performance on the mound. The 24-year-old right-handed starter threw 5.2 scoreless innings, allowing only two hits before leaving the game with a cramp in his right calf. He recorded two strikeouts and threw 86 pitches, 58 of which were strikes. Misiorowski, who broke the World Series velocity record with a 103.5 mph fastball last Friday, began the game with 12 consecutive four-seam fastballs ranging from 100.9 to 103 mph. He finished with a 0.84 earned run average in the best-of-seven series.

Offense came from a roster that relied heavily on small ball rather than power hitting. Rookie Cooper Pratt set a World Series record with six consecutive hits before his sacrifice fly in the sixth inning. He also drove in two runs, including an RBI single in the second inning that broke the scoreless tie against Rays ace Drew Rasmussen. William Contreras, named the World Series Most Valuable Player, hit an RBI double in the sixth inning to extend Milwaukee's lead to 3-0. Jackson Chourio set a five-game series record with 11 total hits.

The Brewers' bullpen secured the final outs. JoJo Romero and Abner Uribe combined for four outs, while closer Trevor Megill retired the final batter in the ninth inning. Megill allowed an RBI double to Chandler Simpson with two outs but finished the game by grounding out Richie Palacios. First baseman Jake Bauers kept the ball from that final out and later presented it to manager Pat Murphy. The team's low reliance on home runs was a defining feature of the season, as Milwaukee scored 32.1% of its runs on home runs, the lowest mark in the majors.

Fans from the Brew-Crew section took over the infield for the trophy presentation. The crowd continued chanting almost two hours after the final pitch. Captain Christian Yelich, who was embraced by franchise legend Robin Yount on the field, described the moment as the best feeling ever. Owner Mark Attanasio addressed the team from the postgame stage, noting that Milwaukee had waited 44 years for this championship.

The series finale occurred against the backdrop of pending labor negotiations. This was the first World Series since 1991 to feature two teams from the bottom half of the league payrolls. The Brewers ranked 19th and the Rays 25th as of August 31. Major League Baseball owners are currently seeking a salary cap, arguing it is necessary for small-market viability. A management lockout is expected to begin on December 2, which could impact the 2027 season.

Tampa Bay manager Kevin Cash praised his players for their resilience despite the loss. The Rays, who began play in 1998, dropped to 0-3 in World Series history after previous defeats in 2008 and 2020. Drew Rasmussen, the Rays' ace, called the Brewers the best team he has ever played against. The championship concludes a season in which the Brewers swept the Los Angeles Dodgers in the National League Championship Series, adding to their seven comeback victories in the postseason.
