A seventeen-year-old resident of McKinney has been accused of plotting to assassinate Congressman Keith Self, a development that underscores the heightened security concerns facing elected officials in North Texas. Campaign officials confirmed the allegations on Tuesday, noting that the federal investigation has brought new urgency to the midterm race in Texas’ third congressional district. The arrest marks a significant escalation in the threats facing the Republican lawmaker, who is currently seeking his third term in office.
According to the campaign, the FBI took the suspect into custody on October 5, a week prior to the public confirmation. The congressional team was notified of the arrest by U.S. Capitol Police the following day on October 6. Investigators believe the teenager had been radicalized and was under federal surveillance. Reports indicate the suspect was planning a terrorist attack on behalf of ISIS, specifically targeting Self at a chili cook-off fundraiser for veterans. The event was scheduled for October 17 and featured former Cowboys players and other high-profile guests.
Rep. Self stated that his team increased situational awareness and security protocols immediately after learning of the threat. He noted that his background in military combat zones helped him remain calm, unlike colleagues who might react with more alarm. Self emphasized that the primary concern was determining whether the suspect was operating as a lone wolf. His wife, a military spouse for twenty-five years, also viewed the situation with serious gravity, acknowledging the inherent risks of public service.
The congressman emphasized that this incident is distinct from previous threats he has received because it resulted in a formal arrest. He described the potential for a serious incident based on the information provided by investigators. Despite the alleged plot, Self attended the targeted fundraiser on schedule. He judged nineteen different chilies and three pots of beans, reporting that the event proceeded without incident.
Self has continued his campaign activities, including poll greeting and voter outreach, stating that the threat will not deter him from alerting the public to his political stance. The arrest coincides with Self’s prominent opposition to Sharia law. In September, he introduced a nonbinding concurrent resolution denouncing the practice and asserting the supremacy of the U.S. Constitution. His district includes McKinney, where the city council recently approved a mosque expansion plan after contentious public debate and a subsequent recall effort against several council members.
Evan Hunt, Self’s opponent in the midterm election, also condemned the alleged plot on social media. The teen’s identity remains undisclosed as the investigation continues. The FBI Dallas office has been contacted for additional details but has not yet responded.
